How to see who doesn’t follow you back on Instagram

Instagram shows your followers and the accounts you follow, but it has no filter for people who don’t follow you back. Here’s how to get that list without giving any app your password.

The manual way

Open your profile, tap Following, and for each account check whether they also appear in your Followers list. It works if you follow a few dozen accounts. Past that, it takes a long time and it’s easy to miss people.

The quick way: use your Instagram export

  1. In Instagram’s Accounts Center, request an export of just Followers and following in JSON. See the exact steps.
  2. When Instagram emails you, download the zip file.
  3. Open Check followers and drop in the zip. You don’t need to unzip it.

Followback compares the two lists in your browser and shows everyone you follow who doesn’t follow you back. It also shows your fans (people who follow you that you don’t follow), mutuals, and pending follow requests.

Deciding who to unfollow

Not following back isn’t always a bad sign. Celebrities, brands, news pages and creators rarely follow back, and you may still want to see their posts. Followback lets you mark accounts as Keep so they don’t clutter your list. To unfollow someone, tap their name to open the profile in Instagram and unfollow there. Followback never touches your account.

Why not use an app that logs in?

Apps that ask for your Instagram password sign in as you. That can trigger Instagram’s security checks and put your account at risk. Read more in Are Instagram unfollower apps safe?
